NOMADS AT THE KUNENE
Nomads at the Kunene
12 days Camping Safari Damaraland Concessions area - Himbas - Epupa Falls -
Etosca National Park
The spectacular colour panorama of this scenery in the rough, rocky and wild Damaraland is only reachable by a 4x4 off-road vehicle.
The black rhino, the rare desert elephant, a variety of antelopes, and wild big cats live in this loneliness. In Kaokoland we will visit traditional Himba villages. We are fortunate to still experience and see these proud, nomadic people today in unspoilt nature. We can admire Epupa Falls on extensive hikes. The crowning of this safari is done by extensive game drives for wildlife viewing in the exclusive west part of Etosha National Park.
To discover and experience the wildlife of the northwest, this tent-safari with bush-cuisine prepared on open fire, full board facilities and nights at the fireplace, is very special an will be well remembered.
Day 1 Windhoek Airport - Omaruru
Departure in Windhoek at 7h30 am or at the Airport. Via Okahandja through central farmland to Erongo region. A farm drive with a sun downer can be enjoyed in the afternoon. (optional)
Overnight in a double room, with dinner and breakfast on a Guest farm.
Day 2 Omaruru - Palmwag
We head north-west into Damaraland. Via open plains, dune fields and mountain areas we reach Palmwag. This little oasis is located on the banks of a dry river, shaded by huge makalani palm trees and water comes from a rare desert spring that attracts a wide variety of wild game, including the rare desert elephants and black rhino.
Amongst the shady trees we set up camp for the night.
Day 3-5 Palmwag - Damaraland Concession Area - Ganumub valley
Two full days to explore the scenic concession area and search for desert adapted elephant and rare black rhino. Rough, rocky mountains and barren desert scenery as well as deep river valleys make up the picture of this lonely, nearly untouched nature, which can only be reached with a 4x4 off-road vehicle. The absence of humans, roads and civilisation allows for optimal game and bird watching. With great luck we might even see lions, whereof about 120 roam freely in this area.
Wild camping.
Day 6 Ganumub - Kaoko Otavi
Visiting Fort Sesfontein, we drive onwards through central Kaokoland in the Kunene region. Here we have the opportunity to meet with the Ovahimbas, the indigenous inhabitants of the Kaokoland.
We set up camp at Kaoko Otavi.
Day 7 & 8 Kaoko Otavi - Epupa Falls
We will have time to experience Opuwo the Capital of Kaokoland. On our way to the Epupa Falls we get introduced to a traditional Himba village. Hiking along the Kunene River with an indigenous guide.
Hiking along the river and sun downer on a hill overlooking the falls.
Camping under Makalani Palms, within the sound of the falls.
Day 9 Epupa - Hobatere
Back to Opuwo we head southeast towards Hobatere, bordering the Etosha National Park.
Camping at Hobatere.
Day 10 & 11 Etosha National Park
We enter the Etosha National park at Otjivasandu. This western part of the Etosha National Park can only be crossed with a special permit! Here we find a spectacularly rich wildlife without being disturbed by other visiting game watching parties. Some species can only be found in this part of the park.
Another full day of extensive game viewing at the different waterholes and along the Etosha Pan. Etosha, with its wealth of animal and plant life, covers an area of 22 270 km˛. It is one of the largest game parks in Africa. Of the 114 mammals species found in the park, several are rare and endangered, such as black rhino, cheetah and black-faced impala. Other large mammals include giraffe, blue wildebeest, mountain and plains zebra, hyena and lion. Antelope species range from kudu, gemsbok and the large and stately eland, to the diminutive Damara dik-dik. Some 340 bird species occur in Etosha.
