USA
Everything that we think about the United States of America has been conditioned by the movies and by television. And, in a sense, it is a perfectly accurate picture. But it is also a picture which is meant to highlight and entertain rather than present the truth. If you go to Boise, Idaho, you’ll find a totally different scene than if you go to, say, Manhattan. In Boise the local petrol is called Skunk and the biggest industry is supplying potatoes to McDonalds. Manhattan does not have Skunk petrol.
You need to get used to the fact that America is a very big country. It has a most amazing range of options. It is impossible to compare, for example, Alaska with Hawaii. And yet both are states of the USA. The best way to deal with this amazing diversity of the United States is to try to think of the places where you are going as a single destination. Think of going to, say, Florida rather than try to work on the basis that you are visiting the USA. If you are going to Florida and New York work on the basis that you are going to both Hong Kong and London. For you are, in truth, when visiting one city only visiting one small part of a great whole.
There are, altogether, 9,396,681 sq km in the United States. Which is split up into 50 states of which one, Hawaii, is 1,525km offshore in the Pacific. And another, Alaska, is separated from the land states by about 305kms. (It is worth knowing that if you are in Hawaii you do not refer to the United States as some destination you are going to from Hawaii. That is insulting to the locals for they rightly think you are already in the United States. What you say is that you are going to the mainland.)
