Kenya

It’s the sheer, awe-inspiring landscapes, combined with a colourful tapestry of cultural diversity that strikes visitors. Africa overflows with a wealth of unforgettable sights, sounds and experiences: from Johannesburg’s high-rises to the Okavango Delta’s pristine wetlands; from Zambia’s traditional villages and Malawi’s idyllic lakeshore to Mozambique’s tropical beaches;
and from Namibia’s world-renowned dunes to Lesotho’s wild mountain country. Not to mention The Mighty Victoria Falls, shared by Zimbabwe and Zambia, undoubtedly one of the greatest natural wonders of the world.
Through the deserts, rainforests, farmlands, vineyards, savannas and mountains you can travel by car, horse, local bus, luxury train or on the back of a bakkie (pickup truck). Alternatively, travel by steamboat across Lake Malawi, explore Botswana’s tranquil waterways by mokoro (dugout canoe) or hit an adrenaline high rafting through the Zambezi rapids below Victoria Falls.
In the bush, you can look for elephants in the desert or penguins on the beach, or experience simple traditional villages of mud-and-grass huts. Alternatively, head for the urban areas and explore the vibrant townships or comfortable city suburbs; appreciate the cultural richness of the Herero, Owambo, Makonde and Himba; or visit the world-renowned National Parks – including Kruger, Etosha and Hwange – with their menagerie of African wildlife and splendidly varied birds and flowers.
Whilst you’re soaking up the spectacular sights, cultures and wildlife, however, do not forget to allow some time to relax, observe and experience the ambient spirit of Africa on its own terms. This is one place that really gets its grips into visitors and residents alike, and for some, it never lets go. Stand alone on a foggy shoreline; walk on a country road with nothing about you but the vast African sky; stroll along a sand river through the wildest bush; venture into a dune field and enter the realms of fantasy; or gaze across the sunburnt plains and witness a scene unchanged since humans first emerged aeons ago.

Fast Facts:
Currency: Various, but all countries in Africa (with the exception of South Africa) do accept US dollars.
Health: A great many parts of Africa are situated inside Malaria areas, so it is wise to check before travelling into an area, whether malaria medication needs to be taken. The same rule applies to any vaccinations that may be required. Heat and sunburn can be serious factors on African holidays, therefore good protective clothing and hats, plus high factor sun screens are essential items to pack. The traveller must always be extremely cautious with regard to drinking water in Africa. The safest way to ensure no ill effects from water is not to drink tap water at all, but to drink only sealed, bottled water. Because of the large variety of habitats, climatic conditions etc. in Africa, it is advisable to obtain specific advice on the region being visited, so that health precautions specific to that area can be carried out.
